The whole process starts with an image. Photos can be presented as hard copy or digital images. Photos that come as hard copy are common since most clients prefer to translate old memorable photos into dramatic paintings. Digital images however present clear and vivid details which make the painting process easier.

After choosing the photo you would like turned into an oil painting, you will need to select the painting size. 12″x16″ is recommended for head shots involving 1 to 3 subjects. 16″x20″ for head shot or full body shot involving up to 4 subjects. For 5 subjects, 20″x24″ is the desirable size. 24″x36″, 30″x40″, 36″x48″, 48″x72″, are highly suggested for 6 to 8 subjects.

Customization follows after choosing the size. This will allow the artist to make unlimited modifications to the painting. The background and the clothes are the common points of customization.

Most of the risks come in the final stage – choosing the right company. The Internet and even usual galleries or art dealers will provide you with a bunch of choices. Be careful in choosing in order to get the painting from photos you truly desire.
